Victor whirled and plunged toward the balcony, praying the glass doors beyond the curtains were open. He heard Consuelo scream and saw her race naked out of the bedroom as her husband lunged at him with a sword. Then Victor was past the curtains and tumbling over the balcony, falling gracelessly onto the poolside patio a dozen feet below, where late afternoon guests were still sipping margaritas. He regained his feet and darted between the tables, past the pool, and down a dozen concrete steps into the sea. The Boca Chica Hotel fronted on a small, sheltered inlet with neither surf nor beach. Victor, who could swim like a porpoise, simply stroked away from the hotel toward the bay, with no immediate idea other than escape. He did not look back but swam straight out with a rhythmic ease that belied the panic roiling in him. He was naked in the ocean with a long swim ahead of him and a lunatic waiting back on shore. Just for openers.

About the Author
Arthur Hansl was born in New York City and raised in Connecticut, Florida, and Europe. He went to school in Switzerland and France, as well as in the United States, graduating from Taft School in Connecticut and Washington and from Lec University in Virginia. After three years in the Marine Corps, he went to Mexico for two weeks and stayed for four years, becoming, he'd admit, an accomplished beach bum. He moved from there to California and then on to Europe, arriving in time to enjoy the last years of the dolce vita in Rome, where he became an actor, starring in some forgettable films and doing supporting parts in somewhat better ones. He returned to Mexico in the late sixties for another dozen pictures in half a dozen years, then back to California for a stint in the soap, General Hospital. In recent years, he turned to writing. Storm Warning is his fourth novel. He now lives in both Montecito and Santa Monica, California.
