Everything in this world ages at a different rate, sometimes we humans can better understand if we compare the particular animal, in this case the cat, to our own ages. These rates are influenced by many things. First is genetic background, or family traits. If your cat is from good healthy stock chances of longevity are very good. Second, physical condition, if maintained with proper diet, timely vaccinations and adequate exercise your pet will be kept free of disease. Third, environment. It goes without saying, that the inside cat is much safer than the outside cat. Exposure to the natural elements of extreme heat and cold can be as dangerous as the risks of injuries and disease from encounters with other animals. Fourth, and last, stress plays a most important role, particularly as the cat reaches the older years. A young cat matures, reaches expected approximate adult size, around four years old. She will in most cases, appear to be fully grown at one and one half years but she will continue to grow and attain full growth at four years. The emphasis during this growing period is on physical well-being, supplemented with good nutrition and regular vaccinations. Emotionally, the cat is involved with her self, immediate surroundings and relationships with other cats; first mother, then siblings, followed by mating relationships and kitten rearing.

About the Book
In the past 25 years, science has made great advancements in the field of Veterinary Medicine. Of these advancements, many benefit our feline community. Where once a cat was considered old at 6 years, with a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years, they are now able to live longer and healthier lives, many cats into their late teens.
On Older Cats presents a view of the aging cat in a most unique way. Rather than being too technical, the information is given in layman language, easily understood by anyone.
The book begins with the first changes you would notice, the outward appearances, then progresses to internal changes and behavioral changes. Each item discusses, from eyes and ears to respiratory system and even sleep behavior, is explained as normal functions followed by results of normal aging and expected problems. Chapter V, What You Can Do, covers everything from home care (diet and grooming to creature comforts), travel care and the most important health care for your older cat. There is also a section on alternative remedies, seldom found in other cat books. And, of course, a section on the emotional topics of euthanasia, pet loss and grieving.
In a time where most shelters think of cats as old at four years, it's refreshing to find an author who feels that cats don't even reach their prime until after six years. The author has been privileged to observe many of her cats living into their late teens and early twenties. The author has taken scientific information and molded it with her hands-on experience to create On Older Cats, a book which would be a welcomed addition to any cat lovers bookshelf.
About the Author
Judith Lindley is an all around animal person, but cats are her favorites. At the age of 20 she was given her first litter of orphan kittens to raise. One of these kittens, Grayless, a domestic short hair black and white tuxedo cat, lived for 18 long healthy years. In 1974, Judith founded Tri-Color Cattery, and bred tortoiseshell-calico colored cats with the object of interest, the rare male. As a result of her breeding project, she founded Calico Cat Registry International in 1978. Animal Helpline, a hot line style advice service, followed in 1979. Having completed her breeding project, she began rescuing and placing unwanted cats from other animal organizations. By 1983 the Tri-Color Cattery feline population was 162 and Animal Helpline was able to absorb Tri-Color Cattery and become a non-profit rescue unit and shelter. Presently, Animal Helpline, still run by Judith and her family, offers sanctuary to older or handicapped cats, as a no-kill shelter and retirement home, and farm animals. Among the animals Judith cares for are: dogs, rabbits, goats, pigs, a horse and a multitude of chickens, geese, ducks, guineas and turkeys - but her favorites are still the cats.
At the age of 50, Judith has spent over 30 years caring for cats and she plans to do so for at least the next 30 years. She has written numerous articles for cat magazines and animal newsletters. She is listed in many Who's Who in both Marquis and American Biographic Institutes and she has a diploma in Animal Science, as well as many years of hands-on experience.
