The Reb, had him by the throat with his left hand. Eyes bulging Jeff struggled to get his right arm free. He was twisting and thrusting mightily with his legs. Arching himself he managed to get the weight of the big man off his right arm. Still clutching his revolver, he brought his arm up and slammed the revolver against the side of the rebs head. Looking around, Jeff saw Sergeant Roberts struggling with a confederate. Another rebel was taking a swing at the Sarge with his rifle. Jeff tipped his revolver and sent a slug crosswise through the mans body from hip to shoulder. The terrible swing of the rifle arced short as the man crumpled into the mud. Reaching out with his left hand, Jeff grabbed the ankle of the man that was struggling with the Sarge and yanked on it. Both the man and the Sarge came tumbling down on top of the man that was already laying on Jeff. The Sarge and his opponent were locked together. Each had a revolver in his right hand and had hold of the others wrist with his left hand. They were struggling to bring their guns to bare. Twisting frantically, Jeff managed to get hold of the sarge's opponent by the hair and yanking his head back. He whacked him, with his revolver barrel. * The Marshal grabbed his gun, yanking it out, pointed it at Jeff. The brakeman stepped over behind the marshal. He said, 'You drop the gun. Do as the Kid says or I will bring the edge of this board down on your head hard enough to send you to the happy hunting ground. Nay, on second thought, it's likely the other place you will be a going.' * The Captain was standing with his glasses up watching the other ship. Jeff took a set of binoculars off a peg and sighted on the ship. He adjusted the focus and there she was sitting right on the horizon and she had a bone in her teeth. * The Captain followed Jeff into his cabin. While Jeff striped his wet clothes off, the Captain said, 'Jeff, we have a real problem. The pirates out number us four to one. We have no place to put them. I would like you to sign back on the crew as one of my officers. We will have a meeting of all officers right away in the wardroom before these pirates get their wits about them. We have to get organized.' * That look of pity left her face and she took on a grim look. Grabbing up a marlin spike, tucking it in her waist, she started yanking wet clothes off another pirate. Ha,ha, like I said, you've got one spunky gal there. Yes sir.'

About the Book
'The President's Marshall' tells the story of a man who, at the age of 13, finds himself involved in the War Between the States. The story begins after he has been involved for three years. He survives the war, partakes in an adventure in the American west then pursues a girl to England. The story tells of the main character's adventures aboard a clipper ship. Later, after he is appointed a US Marshal by the President, he returns West with a lifelong Indian friend as 'The President's Marshal.'
About the Author
I was born in the farm and ranch country of Kansas in 1934. At an impressionable age, I traveled with my father and brother across the backcountry. Father, supporting two boys, worked his way through life by taking whatever jobs he could get.
We went to school here and there and learned a lot from Dad in between. He had been a cowhand, a farmer and worked on the railroad. He had his own farm that he lost to the Great Depression. He told us many a thrilling story of his experiences. Dad had one eye put out by an arrow and had a bullet in his leg. We finally settled in the timber country of Oregon. Growing up, we spent many a trip to the backcountry hunting. Dad taught us about guns and their proper use. Once I learned to read, I couldn't get enough, especially of the early West that dad's stories were about.
I did a hitch in the Navy and another in the Sea Bees. I spent most of my life in construction, but continued to read and study the West and the history of our country. It is my desire to write stories that are entertaining enough to allow one to just lean back and relax.
