About the Book

Staggering into the office of Dave Whittaker, editor of the Bent Elbow (Utah) Tabloid, Charlie Marble ('Old Charlie'), the town's some-time citizen and full-time desert rat, gasps out a wild report about finding a World War II cargo ship rusting away in one of the hundreds uncharted canyons in the nearby desert, some 800 miles from the nearest ocean. Whittaker is highly skeptical but agrees to make the arduous trek to the site and is astonished to find a 15,000-ton vessel propped upright between narrow canyon walls. They climb aboard and Whittaker gradually learns from the ship's log an incredible story out of time and place, its missing crew left behind in a strange world that's as frightening as it is puzzling. The adventure features World War II flashbacks and many colorful characters, both past and present, all caught up in a web of destiny that eventually leads to a bizarre conclusion.
