About the Book

"Kayak Kids" is the story of two teenagers, Bryce and Brenda Bennett, who become excited about the sport of whitewater kayaking and slalom racing. They are members of the swim squad at their hometown YMCA, where their father, Buddy, serves as a volunteer kayaking instructor, and, as the story unfolds, they must choose between swimming at the YMCA or kayaking with the nearby Nantahala Whitewater Racing Club, which has developed numerous Olympians. There travels take them to several rivers around the U.S., where they not only encounter the thrills and dangers of "running the rapids" but also become friendly with other young kayakers. Finally, they qualify to compete at the Slalom Junior Olympic Championships, where they "go for the gold." Although this is fiction, a number of "real life" athletes, including several U.S. Olympians, appear in "Kayak Kids."
