Dear Reader, Welcome to the movies! Oh, it’s a terrible wasteful, ruthless, people-eating---magnificent business. I have no ideas if movies or even virtual will replace the printed word, but the power of the picture and the words put down by desperate men and women to make the pictures move---those words are a literature all of their own, too often forgotten, or at best, dream-scenes left on the cutting room floor. GIVING UP WAR is three such dreams, the screenplays of RUBY RED, BROTHER COCA and SAM AND LILA. Movie stories thrive on the present, now, and often tomorrows, but the stories I tell here are yesterday. Why should you care about yesterday’s news? What could it mean to you? Perhaps only, "thanks for the memories," or as Virginia Slims ad said, "You’ve come a long way, baby." We have, you and I. Surely you remember the Cold War, the Evil Empire and the blood, sweat and tears of the National Security State, the Fortress America that the United States had become for half a century. We were fighting Enemies Out There. We’re still fighting them in the failed and ever-failing Drug War. But maybe, to, in the rising of our consciousness to love an compassion, we’re beginning to last to be GIVNG UP WAR. That’s what the heroes and heroines in these screenplays were tying to do. Bringing us peace. In these tales, may you find yours, too.

About the Book
In the three screenplays of GIVING UP WAR, brave men and women are fighting to bring us peace. --RUBY RED, a courageous Arizona ranch woman stands down the Soviet empire on her own turf...and wins. --BROTHER COCA, a lay missionary in the Bolivian Andes risks his life to bring the truth about the failed Drug War to the American people. --SAM AND LILA, a shaggy-haired cowboy and a blond temptress shatter the lie of Star Wars and the myth of the National Security State. It couldn’t have happened here, we think, these wars that shouldn’t have been. They did happen, though. We let them happen. But now, God willing, we’re ending them, too. In these gripping tales, the reader will re-live the tiny steps toward peace that a few people made, and rejoice at how far we’ve all come.
About the Author
Otis Carney is the author of sixteen books, including the best sellers When the Bough Breaks and New Lease on Life. In film and TV, he has created series and screenplays for major studios and networks, for such actors as Jack Webb of Dragnet, Marlon Brando and John Wayne. The winner of Freedom Foundation, Christopher and Western Heritage awards, he does occasional journalism for national publications, and has written for presidential candidates. According to the New York Times, his landmark campaign film, Choice, was "unique-- a forerunner that enduringly altered political discourse" in the U.S. A graduate of Princeton and a Marine Corps captain, he flew in the Pacific for 22 months during World War II. Mr. Carney and Teddy, his wife of 53 years, have three sons, six grandchildren and in their spare time are cattle ranchers in Wyoming and Arizona.
