The Secret Game

He revved up the motor and soon they were skimming the waves.

            The breeze felt good against his face.  Beth’s long hair was flowing with the wind.

He noticed her small hands tightly clutching the sides of the boat.  He smiled at her and turned back forward.  Another boat came up from behind.  Mark could hear the other boat revving hard.  It had a bigger motor than the boat they were in.  He turned back again to see the boat gaining fast.  It crossed their wake, traveling dangerously close.  At the last moment, the other boat veered sharply off, sending up a cascade of water in front of their boat.  Mark finally looked over and saw a chubby man in the other boat sneering at him before speeding away.

            “He wasn’t supposed to cross on that side,” said Beth angrily, looking off in the directions of the boat that disappeared.

            “I recognized him,” yelled Mark.  “I think he followed us coming up here.  I told my dad about it and he laughed and said I was imagining things.”
