Carol Steadhold pushed the throttle harder. Her fingers clutched and unclutched the wheel, lacquered nails flickering. "His thesis was that everyone has her dark side," she said. "Some expert! Some psychology of campaigning workshop! No one challenged him. The discussion floated way too long. Silly." Highway signs, like flash cards, announced exits for the city of Davis on their right. Her friend, Diane Lind, watched the university and the surrounding flat farmland, green only so long as the winter rains would keep it that way. Carol began weaving through slower cars. Without moving her head, Diane glanced from the moderate traffic, to the speed indicator bouncing between seventy-seven and eighty-three, but said nothing. The president of California Elected Women was speeding. "You made a better choice with the Legislative Analyst's update on education instead of the psycho-babble I sat through," Carol said. "The distinguished professor made it sound like everyone is evil. We're all barely able to hold ourselves in check. The more controlled we are, the worse we are." "Carol, we've all done things we wish we hadn't. Made mistakes. We begin to learn from our mistakes as infants," said Diane. "He made it sound like we were capable of stealing from each other, killing each other! Come on. Could you kill someone, Diane? -- Could you?"
