About the Book

These eight stories take the reader across space and time to the limits of the believable. In THE ANCESTOR, two paleo-anthropologists looking for the fossil remains of an extinct hominid do not realize that a survivor of that species is watching them; THE GREEN BRAIN is the story of a young man who communicates and talks with plants; in the WHEELS OF FORTUNE the hero finds that he has the power to predict (or perhaps even to influence) future events; in AN ARTIST, set in Afghanistan, a man painting decorations on a truck is punished by the Taleban for having represented the female figure; KID SOLDIERS is a snapshot of vicious danger; SEABED PIRATES deals with a technologically advanced but illegal seabed mining and smelting operation on an Arctic island; ZAH recounts the last few days of the man whose frozen body was recently found on a glacier in the Austrian Alps; BRAZILWOOD follows a courageous woman to sixteenth century Brazil, while DRONE, OR THE LEDUC Y-CHROMOSOMAL ANOMALY takes a leap into the distant future, when the few remaining males are relegated to the official role of drones or communal studs in a world peopled and run by women.

About the Author

Peter Koenz has traveled widely and lived in Europe, Asia, and Latin America as a lawyer, international official, and scholar. He writes fiction, but is also a painter and sculptor devoted to visual creativity. Other books by Peter Koenz include Pacifica, The Parrot Tree, and The Ancestor. When not on the move, he lives at present in rural Normandy, even though in his heart – and in his writings -- he continues to wander from New England to the rugged mountain valleys of his native Switzerland, Northern India, Afghanistan, and the frontier country of central Brazil.
