Billy asked his mother, "Mama, could I go fishing?" His mother replied, "Billy, have you finished your chores and homework?" "Yes Mom, I finished everything that I needed to do," Billy replied. So Billy called his dog Ring to go along with him and he took off. He was wearing a pair of overalls with just one strap over his left shoulder and he put his old straw hat on his head. He gathered up his fishing pole, carrying a can of fishing worms that he was going to use as his bait. Some of the worms were trying to crawls out over the top of the can. As Billy was walking bare-foot down the dirt road towards the fishing pond, he met up with some of his little buddies, so he asked them if they could or would like to go fishing with him. They didn’t hesitate, "Oh, why not," they said. Billy never causes any trouble. "Oh yes, Tim and I can go and I’m sure John’s father and mother wouldn’t care at all." So Billy and his friends trudged down the road together, heading for the pond. They soon reached the pond. There were lots of birds around. There were lots of rocks around the shore. They baited their fishing hooks and cast them into the water. Tim caught the first fish. Billy soon caught one and so did Jermain. Every time one of the boys would catch a fish, Ring would bark at them. He stood on the edge of the shore by the rocks, just watching the boys having a real good time enjoying themselves with their fishing. Ring was barking at the fish that he saw in the water, at the edge of the pond, by the rocks. Billy spied the great fish and said, "Oh my. What a big fish!" So the boys cast the net into the pond. Luck was with them because they caught that big fish into the net. They admitted that Ring had helped them. Jermain said, "We have made the day!" Then Billy said, "Let’s go guys!" So they gathered up their fishing gear and head back home. As they walked, they talked about dividing up the fish they had all caught and headed for their homes before suppertime. They were all good, happy obedient boys.

Over the years David has used these stories to help instruct his children as to the right path for a successful life.
