About the Book

Tender Heir is the story of the early years of a marriage between an American woman and an Italian "Levantine" (a person of European descent or nationality born in the Near or Middle East). The setting is Izmir, Turkey, where the author lived for nearly a decade between 1949 and 1959. Although the bare facts of Tender Heir closely parallel the author’s own history, all persons and incidents described in the novel are fictitious and bear no resemblance to real people or incidents.

About the Author

Mary, née Morrill, Tius was born in December 1928 in Portland, Maine. She attended local schools and on graduating from high school, attended Syracuse University and graduated in June 1949. In August of that year, she traveled to Izmir, Turkey, where she had been appointed to teach English at a school for Turkish girls. In that position, she remained for three years and, in 1952, like the heroine of Tender Heir, married a "Levantine".

In 1959, the Tiuses moved to Greece where they lived for the next twenty-six years. For the first twelve years, the family included a son who was born, like his father and paternal grandparents, and, also, like the ‘tender heir,’ in Izmir.
