Breakfast preparations began well before dawn. Each day Jake went outside into the darkness of the early morning to milk Elly. After milking, he’d make his way to the chicken coop which housed 100 chickens and roosters, bringing Martha Rose six dozen fresh eggs. Sometimes he’d whisper to his laying hens, "Yuns end up in a fry pan if ya don’t give up ‘em eggs, hear!" Wherever the wild berries grew, there were the Clydesdale children picking them. Ma Clydesdale made jellies, jams and preserves from the fruit her children brought home. Ole’ man Ned Reilly kept an apple orchard just three miles down the road. He paid one penny to each child to pick as many apples for him as they could. Anything over twenty bushels was theirs to keep and take home. Everybody pitched in by peeling and coring the apples, and washing the wild blackberries and blueberries separating them from their stems. It was a total family event.

About the Book
This novel is about a large, close-knit family living in the mountains of West Virginia. It’s an exciting, and yet very heartwarming story. The parents, Big Jake, and Martha Rose use their survival instincts, skill, and simple common sense to raise their ten children without available, modern conveniences during World War II.
About the Author
Evie J. Kalmukos resides and works in Cleveland, Ohio. She has been writing professionally for ten years for a vintage fashion agency. Other works include a large collection of poetry that has been published in many library anthologies nationwide, which has received numerous awards. This is her first novel.
