She was a slight, blonde woman, with a provocative and impetuous nature. She could drive a burr under my saddle without half trying. In school, when someone answered a teacher's question, she always had to add something to make it appear she knew more than they. She had aptly earned her nickname, ‘Miss Know It All.’ Rebecca said she married a man from Nevada once, but after a two year spending spree that reduced the size of his bankroll, she divorced him, then returned to Scottsdale. Out of breath, she asked, "Trevor, Did you just get here?" "Yes, I’m meeting Rebecca at ten in the coffee shop." Her face turned red, and with a grieved expression she said, "Oh, you haven’t heard then." "Heard what?" "What happened to Rebecca...it was horrible, Trevor." "Don’t keep me in suspense. What happened?" "She’s dead, Trevor!" "Dead?" "Yes, someone murdered her last night. It was terrible, just terrible." I couldn’t believe my ears. It couldn’t be. I was just with her last night and she was fine. Tired maybe, but okay. I fought to control myself. "Slow down, Lynn, and tell me what happened. Slowly." She steered me to the corner of the lobby. "They found her body downtown behind a dumpster early this morning. They think she was beaten to death." "Beaten to death?" I said unbelievingly. "It was awful from what a policeman said." "How did you find out about it?" "The police called me because they found my name and phone number in her pocket." "Did they find who did it?" "Not yet. They came looking for me when they found my name and phone number in her pocket, but I was with someone last night and they discovered I couldn’t have done it. Not that I would. You know me better than that, and besides, I liked Rebecca even though we didn’t get along all that good. Besides, they think a man did it because she was beaten so severely. Broke every bone in her face they said."

About the Book
Trevor Rains, a widower, and former Special Forces captain, arrives in Scottsdale, Arizona, to enjoy his twenty-year high school reunion. He is unaware of the life-threatening danger he is about to encounter in the "West’s most western town." A wealthy influential classmate, and an old Indian friend, persuades him to help the Indian Association from losing their museum, and find those responsible for desecrating and stealing valuable artifacts from their sacred burial grounds. The mystery deepens when two of his classmates are found murdered. Trevor is surprised when he discovers the FBI has sent an old female acquaintance of his to investigate the thefts. To add to his quandary, an old high school sweetheart shows up unexpectedly at the reunion and wants to pick up where they left off twenty-years ago. In the process of the investigation, Trevor encounters the worst of human torture, and has to rely on his old Special Forces training to survive. To his dismay, he discovers that murder and larceny are the modus operandi of some of his old high school acquaintances and teachers.
About the Author
William S. Brown was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, U.S.A. He attended Arizona State University and spent his summers working on a ranch near the Mexican border. Prior to choosing writing as an avocation, he was a professional appraiser, and received the MAI and SRA awards. Mr. Brown has lived in both corners of the United States, Alaska and Key West, Florida. He now resides in Fallbrook, California with his wife, Terrie. They have five grown children, and six grandchildren. Mr. Brown is an affiliate member of Mystery Writers of America, and has published several short stories in Southwest magazines, and technical articles in trade journals. He enjoys reading, deep-sea fishing, and golf.
