The Old Testament, to me, was difficult to understand, and even more difficult to relate to today’s living. It was a group of stories, ranging from creation to the lions’ den. Usually I read the New Testament, and I was known as a New Testament Christian. I delighted in the words of Jesus Christ and the apostles. Each word came alive and often convicted; but rarely was that my experience with the Old Testament. When I ask the Lord to teach me from the experience with MS, I had not thought He would choose to teach several lesson from this older portion of the Bible. To my surprise, reading through the old words not only revealed His love, but also opened my mind to the desire to search for a new and deeper truth. In my search for this truth, I found that His presence became more and more real, making Him a frequent companion. This pursuit was becoming a new and exciting adventure. Initially, the reasons for reading through the Old Testament and the entire Bible had been to find relief from the fears. The Lord took advantage of this opportunity to further instruct me in His ways as we continued the process of rebuilding Sue. After reading the children of Israel’s journeys through Egypt, I continued reading about all their kings. Something stuck in my thoughts and puzzled me. Nearly every account of a king, whether considered good or bad, included how he had handled the idols or shrines in his kingdom, especially those shrines on the hills, (1 King 22:43, 2 King: 23:8,13,19 NLT). One might have done everything else correctly, winning all their battles, even destroying the shrines in the valley, but for some reason he was reprimanded for not destroying the shrines on the hills. The Lord, through His Holy Spirit ministered to me, even when least expected. The Spirit was definitely alive for me in those words. "They must be important," I reasoned, "or else they would not continually be repeated." A parent does not keep drilling an issue, unless it is important. My continued curiosity took me directly to the author. "Lord, I need help. I just do not understand. I guess my mind is still a little dense. Would you explain just what shrines on the hills means? I must admit, these words sound a bit strange."

About the Author
Sue Winget has shared with her husband, Gary, in ministry for over thirty years. She is a busy pastor's wife, mother of three, grandmother of five and foster mother of over fifteen children. Winget was born in Topeka, Kansas, graduated from Topeka West High School in 1966; earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas in 1978 and her Masters of Liberal Arts in counseling and writing from Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas in 1987. Throughout the couples ministry, Sue has been a Bible study/prayer leader and public speaker, as well as, a Christian counselor and mentor. In July of 1992, Sue was a guest in Virginia Beach, Virginia on CBN’s 700 Club and Heart to Heart with Sheila Walsh. The accomplishments above are just the list of "things Sue has accomplished." Sue reflects on her past, "The times of devastation, illness, trials and tests have been the best times of my life! These are the true testing of my faith and dependence upon the Lord.
