About the Book
On May 1, 1987, one of the gentlest men who ever lived died of lung cancer due to exposure to asbestos at the Biscayne Annex Post Office in Miami, Florida.
His death caused his family to embark on a struggle that lasted 14 years to find justice, compassion and closure for this horrible tragedy. What they found was an unbelievable cover-up and incompetence along with a lack of humanity and compassion by the government, the Post Office, the hospital, his surgeons, the Workmen's Compensation Office and their doctor, the Workmen's Compensation Appeals Board, Congress, the Courts, the Judge, the architects, the installers, the union officials, and the lawyers, all who touched this case one way or another and have a responsibility for what happened to John L. Zocco, Sr. and his family.
You may think this is a maudlin story, though it is unbelievable and maddening. You may wonder why it took so long to produce this book. I can tell you it took 14 years for the struggle to end and to know what the ending would be. Sometimes a great struggle against evil forces gives you unsought after benefits. In the end of this remarkable maze of callousness, misinformation, intentional deception, and lack of accountability, we, John's family, found a great spiritual truth that God is in charge and his will is the only thing that matters and would be done in the end for our own good.
I think you will find this book absorbing, truthful, fascinating and above all universal. You may see yourself or a loved one in its pages, or recognize a great struggle you have been involved in. I think you will be comforted that others suffer as you have with loss and still manage to go on with life and thank God for every day. Remember, the night is full of tears, but joy comes in the morning.
