About the Book

Jumbo, as a pup, is imprisoned by a cruel master, once grown he escapes, leaving behind a trail of  violence, terror, and destruction. He's on the run, following a long winding path, trusting no one, foraging off the land, living like a wild animal, trying to survive in a hostile world he does not know or understand.

He finds himself on the Smoky Hill River, a quiet serene place he feels he can call home. The calm is soon interrupted by Ol Razor, the dangerous feral boar who roams the river. Razor makes it clear on their first meeting that Jumbo is not welcome.

Ol Razor isn't his only problem, Billy Hawks a professional hunter has set up camp on the river, hired to bring Jumbo in dead or alive.

Jumbo, seriously injured and near death, is befriended by Charlie Mayfair and Millie Elliot, local teenagers who unknowingly place him in the hands of evil people. Now he must face a world few knew existed and even less have experienced.

A cast of colorful characters, along with the author's unique humor, and a shocking conclusion, will keep the reader mesmerized from beginning to end.

About the Author

Born at Ellsworth Kansas, Lon D. Haden, spent much of his youth exploring the rivers, streams, and prairies of Central Kansas, usually with one or two canine companions. Born to a farming family, he soon became acquainted with the vast amount of wildlife that abounded in the area. He learned their habits as well as their peculiarities.

There was a time when he thought about going west to California and entering a career in acting and comedy, but he knew he would never be happy living in a large metropolitan area. His bond with nature and the great outdoors too strong. Instead he chose to take over the family farm and raise his family in the same rural area that he investigated as a boy.

Like many who choose to till the soil, he worked off the farm at different jobs, livestock feed salesman, packing plant laborer, and recently retired from the Ellsworth Correctional Facility where he worked as a Corrections Officer for thirteen years.

Now he is prepared to take on a new career, writing fictional stories that are humorous at times, and tragic at others. He will take the reader down trails most have never followed, rivers and streams many have never known, and a sagacity into the animal world that few have ever experienced.
