Nightriders shivaree:
There was a commotion back in the woods. I had
jumped down from the fence rail. I was going to race Joe-Red and the little
kids to the house. I’d beat. I’m the biggest.
“Andy, stay put.” Dad motioned from the side door.
Men on horseback came out of the night yelling. “Hear tell thar’s been a
wedding!” And they were firing shotguns into the air. “Dade! Maddie! Got
yourselves hitched?”
This was the first time I’d ever heard about a
shivaree. The bride and groom get captured and maybe carried off on a rail.
It’s supposed to be fun, but it didn’t sound friendly from all the shouting.
Folks in the house came running out and shoved Uncle
Dade and Aunt Maddie inside while they blocked the door.
All the little kids had bunched up around me in the
front fence corner for protection. They were scared. I’m tall for my age so I
moved to cover them. The riders out back wouldn’t notice the little ones behind
me. Maybe even if they did get the newlyweds, they wouldn’t be looking for
Joe-Red. Or was the little girl in danger too?
“Go on now...you boys don’t want to get hurt.” Grandpa
pulled back both hammers on his heavy-gauge shotgun. The sound...’ka-chink,
ka-chink’...was scary. “We don’t allow such goin’s on around here!” His other
sons, my uncles, fanned around the house to guard the rest of the doors and
windows. Everything got extra quiet...

About the Book

cousin, Joe-Red, help Andy solve the mystery? When he has a serious accident,

a home for orphans with lots of room for more children. Native American Tom
Three Horse helps others in Union Station. How did he help Andy discover a new
way to ride a horse? Andy was given a new body. Does his new name: Andar...tu para siempre vas a andar conmigo...mean
a new walk?
The mission: to explore kindness by putting on the
right choice of “armor,” helping kids today, even those with special needs,
become Andars to walk with the King.
Norma Jean Waterhouse set Mystery of the Firefly Riders in 1935-39 as a back-story to Mystery of the Firefly Charms. She knew
this gentle era of music parties, quilting bees, horses, nightriders,
shivarees, crawdads, chalk-rocks and “shill-lay-lees.” Families in the Ozarks
felt rich! Little kids were happy, free to run barefoot and explore...beginning
the Andar To Walk Adventures.
About the Author
Norma Jean Waterhouse wrote Mystery of the Firefly Charms and Mystery of the Firefly Riders in the Andar series. She also recorded a talking book: Hugh Steven’s Night of the Long Knives for Wycliffe
Bible Translators.
She attended John Brown University in Siloam
Springs, Arkansas, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Calvary Bible
College, Kansas City, Missouri.
She told stories, wrote and voiced commercials, and
was a disk jockey and women’s director. Besides JBU’s radio station, she served
on others, both commercial and Christian, such as KFRN in Elkhart, Indiana, and
CBC’s KLJC, which was founded by her husband of 53 years, Harry Waterhouse.
They have three children and eleven grandchildren. She is retired from KC’s
Classical KXTR.
