Elizabeth Tromsness Mitchell wrote Albinism in the Family in honor of her mother who has albinism. This bilingual story, written for children and adults in English and Spanish (Albinismo en la Familia), is an informative biography explaining albinism and how Mitchell’s mother deals with the challenges it brings. Mitchell also simplifies dictionary jargon with simple definitions attached to each page.
The idea of sharing her mother’s unique life came years ago as Mitchell began uncovering the myths of albinism and educating her college students and friends. Now, in this unique story, Mitchell shares with the world not her mother’s disabilities, but her mother’s gifts.
Elizabeth Tromsness Mitchell works to watch for are Meet My Grandpa: The Color T.V. Man, a biography of Mitchell’s grandfather. This non-fiction children’s story informs the reader of her grandfather’s inventions, such as the shadow mask, which enables television color; Read the Color Seven, Joke Journal #1 (pen name Macy Cassidy), a collection of witticisms combined with journal space for the readers’ own written collection; Macy Cassidy, a fictional account of a child accused by his peers of paranoia because of his uncanny knowledge of germs and diseases; and The Obese Christian: A Spiritual Journey, a journal of Mitchell’s personal battle. Most Mitchell books will have English/Spanish translations.
