Lesson Eight...Part II
RESPECT FOR PLANTS AND ANIMALS
We have learned about respect for other people and respect for ourselves.
Teacher question: “Do you feel that plants and animals deserve respect, too?”
Children answer.
Teacher to children: “Yes! They are part of life also.”
Teacher question: “What are some of the ways we can show respect for plants and animals?”
Children answer.
Suggestions:
Care about them Pet your animals Feed them
Treat them nice Give them water Don’t trample on flowers
A Story
SPOT
Once upon a time there were two little children who had a dog named “Spot.” Spot loved the little children. Do you know why? Every day, little John and Sally played with Spot. They petted him. They would always make sure he had water in his dish. At night, Mama would let the children feed Spot his dinner. Spot was so happy! He would wag his tail and get very excited when he saw John and Sally coming!
One day, Spot disappeared. The children called him and called him, and he didn’t come. John and Sally felt sad. They missed him. They would draw pictures of
Spot and pictures of themselves showing how they missed him. They told Mama

how much they missed their little dog. Mama said:
“I know how much you miss Spot. I do, too!”
The days and weeks passed. Daddy said:
“Maybe someone saw how cute Spot was and thought he was lost. They may have taken him home with them.”
One evening, Mama and Daddy and little John and Sally were having dinner. Daddy suddenly looked up.
“What was that?” he said.
A familiar noise of nails scratching wood filled the air.
“It’s Spot!” shouted John.
Mama and Daddy, Sally and John, all ran downstairs to the back door. There was Spot! His paws were red and looked very sore. He was covered with muddy dirt from the neck down.
He must have swum the river!” said Daddy. “He has traveled a long way!”
Sally and John got Spot food and water. Mama put something soothing on Spot’s paws to help them heal. Spot was so-o-o tired. He could only wag his tail a little. Then he happily collapsed into the soft bedding that Daddy laid down for him. Everyone was so happy! Spot was home!

About the Author
