My Journey Begins
My journey is one of great
tragedy, great trial, and great triumph. I want to take you down the road I
traveled...through the cancer, past the fear and the bad reports...all the way
through to the victory God promised me, and that I know awaits you. It is a
road of possibilities, for with God all things are possible! Won’t you
take a step and walk on the water with me? With the Word of God paving your
path and the Holy Spirit guiding your steps, you will make it to the other
side!
And so it began, early in the
summer of 1995. I remember it as if it were yesterday. I discovered a lump in
my right breast. My husband, Charlie, and I were preparing for bed, and as I
lay down, my hand rested across my chest. There it was: a lump the size and
consistency of a pencil eraser. It was positioned near my breastbone, away from
the dense, breast tissue.
A million and one thoughts
flooded my mind, but reason quickly replaced question as I recalled statistics
I had learned about this sort of thing. I had, after all, some history of
cysts. I was sure this tiny lump was nothing.
Charlie’s presence as he climbed
into bed beside me jolted my thoughts to a halt long enough for me to disclose
my curious finding. Charlie nodded a confirming yes; he saw it too. “It’s probably
a good idea to have the doctor check it out,” he suggested. Sensing no cause
for alarm, we did little more than agree upon my seeing the doctor before we
drifted off to sleep.
I was reminded of the lump the
next morning as I showered and dressed for the day. I suppose a visit to the
doctor wouldn’t hurt, I reasoned. After breakfast, I thumbed through my
address book and located Dr. Presley’s number. He was my long-time OBGYN and a
man I highly respected as a healthcare professional. I phoned his office and
described to his nurse the lump I had found the previous evening. She
definitely thought I should have the doctor take a look at it, so she fit me
into the schedule for later in the week.
Dr. Presley sounded concerned,
but not alarmed, as he spoke to me after the exam. He instructed me to schedule
a mammogram as soon as possible. I intended to do so, but thought I would wait
until things slowed down at work before making the appointment. Charlie and I
had established a successful catering business, and at times worked around the
clock to meet the needs of our customers. I’ll just push this appointment
out to a more convenient time, I thought. However, that time would not come
for quite a while.

Just two days after surgery to
remove a lump from her right breast, Deborah Malone West received news that
