About the Author

Originally I did not set out to be a vegetarian. I was attending a church that taught on the importance of taking care of your temple (body). God is concerned with every area of our lives including the foods we eat and the best foods that nourish the body. I was pretty much eating chicken and fish. One day my friend, Shirley Jacobs, came over my house and was sharing how God told her to clean up her temple and she was eliminating meat from her diet. I said, “Girl, you go ahead but I need my chicken.” I was a chickenaholic. I believe that God used her to plant the seed. About a couple months later I went to a hair conference in Alabama. My class was just outside of the herbal shop. The herbalist was out of the country but returned the day I was leaving. I felt this urge in my spirit to get a consultation from her. She was able to fit me in. She gave me these herbs that cleansed the colon, lymph and blood. She recommended that I go on a 70% raw diet for 2 weeks. My husband and I tried the raw food. After two weeks I noticed that my skin looked wonderful and I was feeling great, as well as all cleaned out. I went to Black Eyed Pea to get a vegetable plate. I ate this corn marinated in butter. When the corn went down, my system said what in the world is this oil you are feeding me. My body had an instant reaction. From that point on, I was convinced that eating raw foods aided the body in better health. We began to go to health food restaurants to eat and shopped at health food stores. I began to experiment with cooking healthy foods and working with different spices. I began to cook different recipes for my family and would let my hair clients try some of the dishes. My friend and client, Delores McGruder, would always say, “Girl this is so good. When are you going to do the cook book?” I would say soon but my challenge was trying to find out what the little bit of this and that was being used since I cooked from scratch. After much perseverance, we have So Soul Good.
