About the Book

Standing Tall: Doing Justice in Time of War is the story of a boy whose father dies when he is thirteen years of age, and the meaning he ascribes to this event. His journey through twelve years of seminary studies culminates in his ordination to the priesthood. The connection between celibacy and action on behalf of justice lead him to volunteer for an assignment in El Salvador. He works with his Jesuit colleagues for a persecuted church that is misunderstood by the Vatican and feared by policy-makers in the United States. The courage and commitment of the Salvadoran people, along with the Salvadoran Church's pastoral plan based on the "preferential option for the poor take him on many adventures, both within the Central American region and within his own mind and heart.

About the Author

Dr. William Schmidt lives in Houston, Texas. From the time of his father's death, he has been a keen observer of people who face life with courage, work for justice, and change the world for the better. From New York to El Salvador, he introduces us to those people and places them before us as models for justice-doing and peace-making.

Dr. Schmidt is the son of a veteran of the Normandy invasion. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, New York, in 1980. His doctoral dissertation, entitled the Midlife Role Exit of Roman Catholic Priests: A Grounded Theory Study (2000) examined the issues confronting priests and the organizational response to the present clergy crisis. The dissertation is presently in preparation for publication.

Dr. Schmidt is a professional mental health counselor and public speaker. He is a professor of adjunct sociology and American Sign Language. He lives in Humble, Texas with his wife Ana and his three children, Ana Leticia, John and William.
