For Teachers Only

Since early 1971 I have had an interest in assisting parents and teachers deal with children with learning and behavior problems.  In the beginning I dealt primarily with children committed to state hospitals or residential facilities for the mentally retarded.  In the second stage of my career, I dealt with public school teachers and the children they teach.  Finally, I worked directly with parents with children in trouble.

All of these emotional and professional involvements, have led to the thoughts and feelings I share in this book.  From all of my studies and experiences, I have learned that much effort is lost and many good intentions wasted as a result of parents and teachers not being honest with themselves or the children for whom they must assume responsibility.  My philosophy is simple and my comments to the point.

I have found that there is a simple order to dealing with children that live in your house or attend your classroom.  I call for love, compassion and order.  For every child there must be clear cut limits.  The limits set the parameters within which the child operates behaviorally.  The childe with no limits is destined for insurmountable conflict.  I simply ask the teachers to be strong enough to set those limits and assist the child in appreciating same.
