As he did every Sunday afternoon during his shift, disc jockey Russ Gibb was working the telephones. Being the fledgling medium that it was in 1969, FM radio was extremely open to the suggestions of its small but dedicated audience. Correctly labeled “underground radio” by the trade journals, stations like WKNR in

The reply came from a young voice filtered through a haze of phone static. “Uh, this is Tom on the line.”
“Yeah, hello Tom. What’s going down?”
Tom began to respond, but Gibb interrupted. “Have you got your radio on?”
“Yeah, a little bit — “
“Well, turn it down, man,” Gibb admonished, “cause you’re giving us feedback.”
Tom did as instructed and returned to phone. “I was going to rap with you about McCartney being dead and what is this all about?”
Unseen by his audience, Gibb rolled his eyes skyward. Not another one of these superstar death rumors! Remembering a similar story about Bob Dylan that was making the rounds a few years back, the disbelieving deejay decided to educate the kid.
