About the Book

The world had seen many conflicts and cruel wars.  In a relatively short span of time, mankind had progressed from stone spears to nuclear and biological weapons.    The ingredients for such tools of mass destruction had been disappearing from certain countries and research centers for the last decade or two.  A naive nation was surprised and totally unprepared for the unleashing of a man-made Hell.  The question is; “Could they survive in a world gone suddenly insane?  That remained to be proven.

Jim Rae was just one of the thousands of commercial drivers that guide their semi tractor trailers across the nation’s highways.  He didn’t have much interest in politics but it didn’t take him long to realize the nation was in trouble.  Being suddenly immersed in the horror and chaos of a full-blown terrorist attack, he had no way of knowing the key roll he might play in the outcome.

Cindy was young in calendar years but much older within her mind.  She had suffered enough, been through enough pain to take away her youthful naiveté forever.  There were only two things that kept her going in such terrifying times ... Her wits ... and her love for Jim.  Would their unique bond prove to be enough to help them survive the apocalyptic turn of events?  Only Time or God knew the answer.  Unfortunately, for now, neither of them were talking.

About the Author

H. William Berger,  wrote the first hair raising, heart thumping text of Fan The Flame over thirty years ago originally calling it ‘Ashes to Ashes’.  It was rejected by various publishing houses because, in their opinion, “It suspended belief “  Discouraged by such a negative reception, Berger put the manuscript on a shelf to gather dust and went on with other projects.  Then 9/11 horribly impacted our nation and profoundly changed the way we perceive our place in the world.  Gone within minutes was our feeling of invincibility and security. With a chill, the author retrieved the manuscript, cleaned it up and sought to share it with others.

A world traveler, he has led an extraordinary, adventuresome life in which, as he puts it: There have been ample challenges, sufficient controversy and enough disappointment (in self and others both ‘in-country’ and ‘out-country’) to get a wise man confused or make a saint mumble under his breath.  “Never the less,” he quickly adds, “I have also been blessed with several true and trustworthy friends and a loving, supportive family.  That and our national freedom is worth far more than anything else in this life.”

A licensed commercial, instrument, multi-engine pilot, ‘Bill’ has also owned and operated a trucking company in Illinois. He has operated long-distance trucks, busses or planes in every state but Hawaii and traveled on assignment within numerous foreign countries as well. His keen interest in people and deep respect for their differences has served him well within several cultures.

Along with Fan The Flame, Berger has written two volumes of poetry; Jongleur’s Dalliance and Works of a Mad Monk ,   and four youth fiction books, Papa’s Sara Wants to Bake , Tall-Tale Katie , Freddie the fly and A Different Night Before Christmas . He is presently working on future novels, Suffer the Saints and the Children and The Bog Babies .
