We must take our history into account when we look at where we are in life. It is essential that we factor in slavery, as it is a very big part of our history. Refusal to accept the fact that life in America was never a level playing field will result in feeling powerless and inferior. But when we look at the facts, and realize that many of our children score very highly on standardized tests, and in many other areas, then we will begin to see clearly that we are a highly intelligent group of people. This is the antidote to the fear and self-doubt that arises from the false belief that we, as a people, are academically inferior. If we could only understand the severity of the mental and physical devastation our race has endured we would be more caring and compassionate toward one another as well as ourselves. Take a moment and focus on what it must have been like for our ancestors who were enslaved. Think about the strength and courage they had to have to face each day and then continue on your own mental journey. Depending on your age and generation, it is likely that your great grandmother lived a part of her life in slavery; your grandmother may have experienced a life in an America tainted with the history of Jim Crow; your mother, segregation and the Civil Rights movement. Surely you can appreciate that we are a part of a family who has overcome tremendous odds. The same genes and spiritual power that led them to victory are stored within us and will lead us to our own victories.
