We who have gone through the years of raising children can now heave a sigh of relief. That sigh may not be entirely happy. Have we really done all that we can and should when it comes to giving a new beginning to others of God’s children?
There is probably no job or assignment that requires as much knowledge and know how as trying to raise children. At the same time, there is probably little that is taught or learned by prospective parents prior to the time of need. What can girls learn in high school? Some of them become pregnant prior to graduation. It would seem that a class in child development would be just as important as a course in the use of computers.
The fact of the matter is that most of us result from on the job training after the fact. How would you like to report to a doctor who got all of his knowledge by making mistakes? That is just about where the parents of today stand. This is not all bad. After all, learning how to live and love five or six other individuals besides ourselves is a definate learning experience.
When mothers and daughters do not see eye to eye in the teens, it is surprising how fast the daughter comes home to mother to gain insight as to how best to deal with her own family problems. She feels that her upbringing was adequate, and acceptable, so she wants to transfuse a similar set of events in her own family. Having a grandchild can be an important event when it comes to helping a daughter learn to appreciate her mother.
Most parents want their children to be better parents than they were. Looking back on mistakes made, and sad experiences entertained, helps mothers to realize they might have done things differently as well as better. On the job training was not all that it might have been.
Yes, there are a lot of snares and pitfalls for parents to trip over today. Their children are being raised in a different time and place. This means their temptations and offers of “the good life”, are different today. Unfortunately most of this information pertains to “stuff”. We have too much of that all around the place. More emphasis needs to be placed on immaterial things that will benefit all of us as time marches on. Remember, there are only a few things that we will be able to take with us when the time comes to leave mortality. We should spend time trying to determine exactly what those things are.

Most Americans will agree that the future of our country is in the hands of our youth. After all, we of the older generation will not last forever. This means that what our children are learning and living will be with us for an extended period of time.
Despite the fact that we live in a time when we are bombarded with facts of all kinds, we still have a few tangible truths hanging around which we should acknowledge. It is those truths which we need to inclucate in the thoughts of the next generation if at all possible. This means we need to search the literature of the day, and also give real credence to those among us who have been successful parents.
All of us would like to taste success in all that we do. Mostly we find that someone or something always seems to get in the way. As a result, we may depend too much either on ourself, or on someone else in whom we can put our trust. This may or may not result in the ending that we had in mind. What then are we to do? That is the purpose of this subject. Hope- fully you will find it to be helpful.

It is the author’s contention that, “practice makes perfect”. Any dentist or physician will acknowledge that he learned more from his practice than he did from going to school. Following the above 35 children are well over 100 grandchildren. Experience with this group has led to the answers included in this report.
The main reason for this writing is that we live in perilous times. It is much more difficult to teach and train one’s off spring today than it was some 60 years ago. As a result, parents are under greater pressure today to “get their point across”. You will be interested to read how the use of the scriptures was helpful in teaching nine children belonging to Earl and Joan Wright. Their approach to child rearing is not included.
While scriptural use is enlightening, it is also true that each of us has access to personal inspiration. It is that source which all of us need to enlist in order to meet the problems of the day.
