As you can see, after that cab ride back to the boat, my spirit man got knocked out by the flesh and in that cabin it was like the “Rumble in the Jungle.” My flesh kept telling me to “Float like a Butterfly and Sting like a Bee!” The last words I heard were, “Rumble Young Man Rumble!” Monday night was unreal! The flesh did the old rope-a-dope on my spirit. My spirit man was throwing good punches for a while, before he just tired out. The flesh came off the ropes and started jabbing and punching and punching and jabbing and before you knew it, I was in my birthday suit. The knockout hand begun.
When I woke up the next morning, I heard faint whispers of my flesh chanting, “I’m the greatest! I told you I’d win! I’m so pretty! I out smarted you. I got brains and I’m pretty!” My spirit man definitely got out smarted. My flesh kept me away from bible study and prayer the past three days. My next thought was how for the past three years, I was a counselor at my church and a bible study teacher for the teenagers. I actually took a vow of chastity with them. And here I am on this boat straight tripping! I said to myself, “brotha you’re a hypocrite.” I wanted to talk to my heavenly father, but I was too ashamed. I wanted to read my bible but I knew it would cut me up like a two headed sword. I knew I would come across scripture like, Ephesians
or 2 Corinthians 7:1 “Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness, out of reverence for God”

I knew these commandments would blow me away, so I buried them in the dungeon of my spirit. Dam, this abstinent thing is challenging. Especially when you put yourself in a compromising situations. I tell my students this scenario all the time, “If you’re a recovering alcoholic, you don’t need to be in the bar with your buddies watching the Superbowl.” But yet and still, here I am. I’m a single heterosexual black man, struggling with his walk with Christ. Brotha has a job, no kids, and dental benefits, trying to stay abstinent until marriage. Please pray for me! So anyway, I still haven’t gotten out of bed yet. I’m still sitting here tripping off of the past three days.
My boxing gloves were definitely trying to stay out of retirement this week. So I said a quick prayer. “God lead me through this day, amen” That’s all I could say to him before I got up and took my shower. After I showered and got myself together, I went up to the 11th deck to get some breakfast. As I walked out onto the deck, I saw a lady friend of mine I met a couple of days prior. I thought to myself that she was looking cute. He has been writing short stories for years, and now with the encouragement of his co-author, he has finally taken his creative style of writing to another level.
