pancake flat farmland stretches forever
once a mammoth fresh water lake
now drained
surface water hiding
underground
in pools beneath sandy soil blankets
orchard blossoms and
plowed fields fan out from water cisterns
floating on sacred water
in this opera of Grace
drowned childhood fears vanish
in waves of water harmony underground plasma is sucked then
sprayed
dripped
flooded
soaked
on
under
vines
stalks
roots
petals
trunks
plants to eat
crops to wear
feed for caged animals
all harvested 365 days of the year
the mound appeared one morning in the middle of the lake bed field
first it was a mere bump
noticed only if being looked for intentionally
one week later
it was a pimple easily seen from the freeway five miles away
each hour
earth’s skin began to fester
growing
into a boil filled with toxic trash pus
work on the sore no longer was hidden in darkness
giant moving machines
scraped
ripped
hauled
buried
trash
garbage
sludge
carcasses
dirt and rocks piled on top
hid the rot and stench
one truck load at a time
one year later
there is a mountain in the middle of lake bed
grass and trees have been planted near the top
the plants will hide methanol belching pipes
exhaling fumes from the mountain’s core
in five years
children will play on this mountain park
families will picnic
lovers will lie on blankets in the sun
birds and rabbits will die nesting on
trash mountain
