The deviation that the place bettor should be concerned about is the one pertaining to the number of rolls (5 rolls) between the 7,s because it is those rolls between 7,s which are in favor of the shooter. They are 5 to 1, 4 to 1, 3 to 1, 2 to 1 and then 1 to 1 or a 50-50 chance to win for the place bettor. The 5 to 1 chance will be used up by the establishment of the point. The 4 to 1 chance, 3 to 1 chance and the 2 to 1 chance are the only three rolls that are in favor of the place bettor because the 1 to 1 chance is just an even chance.
Let’s take an average dice decision. The shooter rolls a point and then on the 6th roll, he 7’s out. This is based on the fact that the 7 will appear on the average of 1 in 6 and that any point the shooter established will not on the average appear in those next 4 rolls before he 7’s out because any point established requires on the average more than 6 rolls for it to reappear on the dice. In view of this, there are only four rolls after the point is established that the place bettor has in which to make a profit. If the play went with the averages the place bettor hasn’t got a chance if he plays to the same dice decisions that the pass line and come bettor are bound by. ie. once made they cannot be called back. That means that the place bettor must do one of two things to compensate for the handicap. l. Take down his bets after 4 rolls following the establishment of the point or 2. Keep a pretty close account of the deviation and play when the deviation is in your favor.
It is rather easy to keep track of the rolls following the establishment of a point for 4 rolls. Just take four chips in your hand and put one back in the rail after each roll. When you have no more chips in your hand you know there has been 4 rolls. Then you ask the dealer to take you down.

After that he delved into the various ways that you could win and explained the hazards that you would have to overcome in order to walk away from the table a winner. Mathematically he showed you the method that could be adapted to any crap table and would result in 3 to 1 odds in your favor. The 6 and 8 can be made 5 ways each and the 5 and 9 can be made 4 ways each for a total of 18 ways versus the 7 (the only way you can lose after the point is established) can be made 6 ways making it 18 ways to win and 6 ways to lose and when reduced down it is 3 to 1. So, you can see his credentials as an author is quite impressive. This is further displayed in the writing of “Betting Between Sevens” in which he sets forth the mechanics of betting in the game of Craps starting with the initial roll of the dice and continuing through the many facets of the game. The book thoroughly explains which bets to make and which bets not to make and the reasons therefore.
After retiring he wrote a booklet on a completely different subject that he distributed . This book was entitled “So you want to be an Artist”. He didn’t have much success with the sale of the booklet however he knew then that he could write successfully if he so desired.
