PROLOGUE
Walking along an extensive stretch of beach with the sand crunching beneath his feet, the darkness swept over him with the torment of a large, crashing wave. Overcome with fear, he stopped in his tracks, afraid to move or even utter a sound as the darkness - cold, black and silent - loomed around him, anxious to take hold.
With his eyes closed he can almost hear something in the death-like silence, but the noise is undecipherable. Like a prisoner, he’s trapped only by the phobia that surrounds him. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he slowly moves forward. The only sound penetrating the silence is that of his beating heart…thump, thump, thump. An eerie spell is cast over the vast emptiness, and he gazes into the gloom. His heart continues to pound, and a cold sweat breaks out on the nape of his neck. Searching the murky darkness, there’s still nothing. After hours of walking, the darkness continues without end. As he walks further, the blackness becomes more and more dense, yet he’s aware that something is hidden behind it in the far distance.
Standing in the cold darkness, nothing is visible as it becomes a separate entity, and fear is his only companion. A light fog mingles slowly with the darkness and curls around him. Again he senses something is there, concealed within its fold. Yet, gazing into the obscurity, he sees nothing.
Moments before the darkness suffocated him entirely, he awoke.

AT DAWN THEY SLEEP is Canadian-born Gregory B. Trotter’s first novel. In 1978, at the age of 10, he was involved in an accident where he spent almost three months in a coma with severe brain damage. Several months later, after a miraculous recovery, he returned to school and ten years later graduated. During childhood, comic books and reading had always been his hobby but had to be shelved for a while after the accident due to his lack of retention. Later in his life, with a growing interest in writing, he successfully completed a writing course through correspondence with the Long Ridge Writer’s Group. He was able to compile notes and ideas that culminated in this novel, At Dawn They Sleep.
