Grandpa and I went to this little beach where the waves come crashing down really hard. Grandpa and I decided to try some body surfing. We both tried to catch a few good waves, but we got tired fast and came in for a rest. The only thing was, when Grandpa went in the ocean, he had hair. When Grandpa came out of the ocean, he was BALD!
“Grandpa!” I shouted. “Where’s your hair?”
“Well, I don’t know,” he answered sort of perplexed. “I was standing in the surf, and a big wave hit me. The next thing I knew, my hair was gone!”
“Did anyone see you?” I asked, thinking that it might be funny to see someone with hair one minute, and bald the next minute.
“Well, I don’t know that either,” he answered. “I was too busy looking for my hair.”
I giggled, and he laughed one of his low, booming, grandpa laughs.
“Grandpa, we have to find your hair,” I declared. “Your head will get sunburned!”
“Well, I suppose you’re right,” he said, “but I was just going to take a little nap first.”
“No, Grandpa! You can’t nap now!” I insisted. Even though Grammie often complained about Grandpa’s unruly toupee, I knew she really wouldn’t like it if he came back without his hair. “Come on, Grandpa, I’ll help you look for it.” With that I grabbed Grandpa’s hand and led him into the surf.
I don’t think Grandpa had much hope of finding his hair, actually. But for some reason, I just thought we would. Anyway, there we both were, splashing against the rough, foamy waves, trying to make our way past the breakers.
Then, Grandpa and I saw a really big wave that was going to crash right on top of us. We held our breath, and dived under. It is a little scary the first time you dive under a wave. Really big ones still bump you around a little, but it is so amazing when you come up for air and you’re on the other side of the wave where it’s nice and calm. So there we were, just Grandpa and me, treading water with our heads poking out of the water like little buoys.
