January 1: God
The book of Genesis tells the story of creation. The very word genesis in fact is defined as an origin, creation, or beginning. The very first chapter of Genesis gives a synopsis of all of creation, from the creation of night and day, to oceans and dry land, and the creation of all creatures from the very lowest on earth and up to man--Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
If we take a closer look at Genesis 1:1, we see that it has two distinct parts. First, "In the beginning God" shows us that before anything else existed God was already there. If you had a time machine and could travel back in time, you would find that God existed ten thousand years ago. He existed ten million years ago. He existed ten billion years ago. The fact is that God is infinite and that He has always existed and He always will exist. Second, "created the heaven and the earth.", shows us that everything was created by God. The earth, the universe and everything in it were created from nothing, for in the beginning nothing existed except God. Everything that has a design has a designer. Think of the intricacies and the complexity of design to even a single cell in your body. Anything that is that complex has a design and that design has a designer. That designer is God.
The Bible first mentions God in Genesis 1:1—“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The original Hebrew text uses the word ‘elohiym which is translated here as God. ‘Elohiym is defined as rulers, judges, divine ones, angels, gods, or the one true God. ‘Elohiym is the plural form of the word ‘elowahh. In Arabic ‘elowahh is translated as Allah. Early Bible scholars thought that this use of the plural form of the word was indicative of the trinity of God. At the time of the writing of the book of Genesis there was no concept of one God living in three persons that we know of today. The plural form of the word is therefore used as a way of showing that God was the one and only Supreme Almighty God. Let us worship our creator today and let us pray the name “God.”
September 2: Lord of kings
In the book of Daniel we find that Daniel and three of his friends were among the royalty of Israel which were taken into captivity in Babylon. These men were well educated in Babylon so they could serve in the court of king Nebuchadnezzar. God gave them great wisdom. When they were brought before the king, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were found to be like no others. Daniel was given great understanding in dreams and visions.
In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar he was awakened by a disturbing dream. When he awoke he could not remember the dream. He called for his magicians and sorcerers to tell him what the dream was and what the dream meant. When none of them could give him the answers Nebuchadnezzar gave orders for all of the wise men to be executed. When they sought out Daniel and his friends in order to kill them, Daniel used his wisdom to defuse the situation. Daniel asked the king for some time so he could interpret the dream. Daniel was granted the time and he asked his companions to pray that the dream would be made known--Daniel 2:16-18 "Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation. Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon."
God answered their prayers and He gave Daniel the dream and the interpretation in a night vision. Daniel blessed God who sets up kings and removes them and who gives wisdom to the wise--Daniel 2:19-21 "Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:".
Daniel was brought before the king and he told him that there is a God in heaven that reveals secrets. Daniel told the king what his dream was about and what God was revealing to him in his dream. Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and worshipped Daniel. He stated that Daniel’s God was truly a God of gods--Daniel 2:46,47 “Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.”
In Daniel 2:47 we find two new names for God.
