It was then that they both heard the siren and saw the flashing lights. A man was shouting on a bullhorn, from the cab of a fire truck. “ It is mandatory for all residents to go now, before the hurricane strengthens. Flooding is expected at this end of the island, which will soon make it impossible to leave by car.”
Peter said, “Mom, do you think Shadow has found a safe place outside?”
“Animals sense danger before most people do, and Shadow is a very smart cat,” she said. “She could always go up on the Mullins’ deck. I bet she could squeeze under one of the empty flower boxes up there. That would keep her out of the worst of the wind and rain.”
Mr. Mullins told me that cats have nine lives,” thought Peter. “Shadow may have used one life last year when she disappeared, so I guess she might have eight more.”
Peter changed to dry clothes. He decided to leave a big bowl of food in the kitchen and a big bowl of food outside. If Shadow was inside or outside, there would be food for her.

About the Book
A hurricane is headed towards the island where Peter lives. As the storm moves closer, the residents are ordered to evacuate to the mainland. Peter plans to take his cat, Shadow, with him. However, Shadow disappears as Peter and his mom get ready to leave. They spend the next few days in an evacuation shelter. Peter is anxious to return to the island to find his cat. Does Shadow survive the fury of the hurricane? The surprises that await Peter will delight readers.
About the Author
After writing her first book, Where’s My Shadow?, Carol Lott McNamara wondered if there would be a sequel. A record breaking hurricane season provided the idea for the second book. Where’s Shadow Now?, although a work of fiction, does contain many hurricane facts. They were included in the story to help the reader better understand these storms. More memories of the two cats in the author’s life found their way into this second book.
