A MOTHER’S LAMENT

Wake up, wake up, sleepy head.

It’s time that you got out of bed.

You have slept the whole night through

Twelve hours sleep is enough for you,

Get out of bed and get yourself dressed

And come down to the breakfast that you missed.

All the others have eaten breakfast and are gone.

Are you staying in bed all day long?

I am leaving the room and when I come back

You had better be dressed and out of the sack.

Here are the new clothes I want you to wear.

I saw in your old clothes you have a large tear.

Here are some new socks for you as well.
Your old socks are now beginning to smell.
While you are at it give your shoes a quick shine,

I see they haven’t seen polish in quite a long time.

And brush your teeth with toothpaste for a change.

Your breath smells like an outhouse back of a grange.

And a shower would do you a world of good

And let you smell like a young man should.

You hair is all tangled, smelly and greasy.

If someone is next to you it makes them feel queasy.

Last but not least your nails need some mowing.

Because in the dirt under them something is growing,

When you are all clean and look nicer and neat

Come downstairs and I’ll give you something to eat.

If you don’t comply I will come back and you can bet

I will give you a scrubbing you will never forget.
