On February 18th, cannons were heard at Cairo and Paducah incessantly all day. On the 19th, the sleet continued. The news that day said that Fort Donelson was taken, and the victory was the cause of the cannons firing. My feelings were awful and solemn that day, not knowing if Martin was dead or alive. I resumed writing to take my mind off the war.
The 20th was again spent in fearful suspense. On the 21st of February, I went to the post office to see if there was a letter from Martin. There was none. I then went to the home of Brother Read, who told me the secessionists had raised several false reports against me. This greatly increased my distress, insomuch that I almost sank into despair.

About the Book
Little Berry Deaton was a simple country preacher who found himself exiled in Illinois during the Civil War and unable to contact his family in Tennessee. He kept a diary of his experiences and tells us his feelings about what started that war and shares with us the letters he received from his son in the union army. Any history buff will be engrossed in the "you were there" way in which he describes the battles at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. His comments about politics and religion will make the reader think about where our country is today and where it should be.
About the Author
Eva Mae Deaton (Stein) is an 81-year-old great-grandmother who spent thirty years as an air force wife of a bomber pilot and the mother of four sons, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She co-authored a book about her husband's experiences during his air force career. "Into the Wild Blue Yonder," published by the Texas A&M University Press. Little Berry Deaton was her great-grandfather and his desire for his diary to be published has pushed her into writing of his experiences during the Civil War.
