Imagine a boy crying clutching onto his mother’s leg outside of
the kindergarten classroom because he did not want to go to
school on “writing day”. Picture a girl who tries so hard to
write the three sentences yet struggles with writing one word.
This is an issue experienced everyday with writing in the
kindergarten classroom. Students do not know how to start
writing. They struggle with the idea of getting their thoughts put
into words and many tears are shed as a result of the struggles.
This raises an important question: Does learning how to write
have to be so painful?
Fifty Days of Happy Writing is a writing program for kindergarteners to learn writing in a positive and fun experience. As a result, if students are excited for writing in kindergarten, it will set the tone for the rest of their education experience in writing. Fifty Days of Happy Writing will teach kindergarten and writing skills in a fun manner which includes “Willie the Writing Worm” puppet, songs and personal journals for each student. The beginning days of Fifty Days of Happy Writing will include writing straight lines, circles and then each letter of the alphabet. Students will practice writing each letter of the alphabet and then draw a picture of an item that begins with each letter. Students will then label their picture by writing the word that starts with that particular letter. This will turn into their alphabet journal which the students will use as a reference for future writing. After 30 days into the writing program, students will begin writing phrases (noun and verb) and then work into complete sentences. By the end of the Fifty Days, students will be able to write 3-5 sentences.
In addition to the work completed in their journals, students will also complete work at home with their parents. Parent teacher communication is vital in kindergarten and it is important for parents to be working at home with their child in connection to what the teacher is teaching in class. Therefore, “Home Connections” are essential to the success of Fifty Days of Happy Writing. The "Home Connections" are included.
