A Story of Kate Chase's Family

Foreword

The Spring Grove Cemetery is located in the City of Cincinnati.  At section thirty in lots ten and eleven Mr. Salmon Portland Chase’s entire family is buried except for his younger daughter, Mrs. Janet Ralston Chase Hoyt.  When you look upon the two lots, you’ll see only one rather large monument placed there by the American Bar Association of this country.  In the forefront of the two lots appear three small stone markers with the names of Salmon P. Chase, Kate Chase Sprague, and Ethel Chase Donaldson (Mr. Chase’s granddaughter and daughter of the late Katherine Chase Sprague).

At one time in the past, there had been no markers at all upon these two lots pertaining to these various interments. The American Bar Association changed that condition after 1923.  Mr. Chase’s gravesite had remained unmarked at Spring Grove Cemetery for thirty-eight years.  However, there are other members of Mr. Chase’s family buried within these two lots who still have no stone markings commemorating their lives or their final resting place within this cemetery.

Date of Death:                            December 1, 1835

Cause of Death:                         Child birth & excess bleeding preformed

Date of Birth:                            November of 1835

Date of Death:                           February 6, 1840

Cause of Death:                        Scarlet Fever while under the care of her

                                                  grandparents.
