A great number of Strongs in America are descendants of Elder John Strong, a Puritan, who arrived at Nantasket, Massachusetts, in 1630. George W. Strong was a seventh generation descendant of Elder John and traveled west from Connecticut to Michigan where he helped develop the Southeastern corner of the State. He was involved in Great Lakes shipping, the railroad, city politics and construction.
The Strong Hotel located in Monroe, Michigan, was one of the best known hotels in Southern Michigan.
His is a story of successes and failures, joys and sorrows, and a journey that ended in obscurity.

The War of 1812 was raging and his youth was the time of covered wagons and stagecoaches. George W. Strong became a local giant in the era of steamships and the railroad. His path took him through the dark days of the Civil War and the brighter times of the brith of the Industrial Revolution. His life as an icon in a small town in the Midwest was all but forgotten as he passed into obscurity at the age of 92.
