About the Book

The book, CALVERT, REMEMBER ME, is a novel about two young attractive high school teachers who do not find teaching to be a burdensome daily chore that supports their pleasant lifestyle, but creative information to their subject matter to awaken curiosity, trigger or stimulate other interests for their students, and maybe they like the opportunity to pass on suggestions about appropriate careers for some and would be delighted to feel they might be a role model for some others. They have learned viable techniques to use in their teaching that tend to increase self esteem in their students and a liking for learning interesting information, particularly for enhancing their background. They are willing to spend some of their time after school hours helping students with problems but not labeling them as such. Their cheerful manner along with their good looks and fine taste in manners, grooming, and dress make many of the young people more interested in seeking education as a career. They show by budgeting, saving and good planning how they can afford a somewhat expensive vacation. Leave it to these two erudite experts to pack as much engaging action as possible in a three-week vacation that includes a voyage on the Queen Elizabeth 2 to England and then visiting Paris, London, and the English countryside. Before they start the three-week vacation, unexpected things begin to happen that could change their lives when they decided to move to the farm that one of the teachers surprisingly inherited. The story holds suspense, romance, adventure, and pleasure and appreciation for Southern Maryland living. The author has blended persons and events to produce a timely novel with interesting occurrences and memorable characters. All came back to the little peninsula, liked by the author since childhood, to try to save the last vestiges of a place called “home.”

About the Author

Phyllis S. Johnson was born in Calvert County, Maryland, and attended the local schools during elementary and high school years.  She graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA degree in English and received an MA degree in secondary school counseling from the George Washington University. She taught English in Prince George’s County high schools and then was a counselor in several Prince George’s high schools for a number of years.  When she retired, she returned to Calvert County to resume some of the farming activity she had grown to enjoy and respect as a child.

The writer is concerned about abuse to the environment, particularly the air pollution that is causing problems to some young and adult residents alike.  The abuse to the rich farm land and the beautiful bodies of water that are losing their use for pleasure and for seafood because of the misuse, is being ignored by some people in positions to correct the problem.  The dwindling number of small farms and the special kind of people who care about preserving the rich natural resources for other caring generations will be a serious loss in our population.   She feels importing more and more farm produce will increase diseases in humans and bring insect pests and plant diseases into our country.  She believes our government at all levels has been negligent in encouraging and assisting those people willing to maintain and operate the small farms to continue production.  Instead, our government seems to be encouraging much waste and abuse by permitting more and more building of houses with large lawns, too many shopping malls, wasteful utility plants and large utility corridors.  Our country is importing too much food and other products that should be produced in this country.  We are losing a beautiful, healthful lifestyle that our children can only find in books.

Philip Johnson has given much assistance in producing this book by his offering of   services as a Consultant, Researcher, and Technician.  He is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Yorktowne Business Institute.  He is creative, knowledgeable, and talented in many ways and his encouraging and inspiring comments were greatly appreciated.
