With the rifles they had taken from Madame Fang’s gate guards, Tod and Scott laid down a deadly fusillade, felling several of the attackers in the vanguard. But, like mindless zombies, others materialized, seemingly from nowhere, stepping over the bodies of their fallen comrades.
Tod and Scott continued to fire, taking a heavy toll. But, eventually, the few rounds in the magazine of the bolt action rifles were exhausted. Now, the threatening figures slowly advanced, their eyes glazed, their faces set in a grim, murderous expression.
“Keep close together and guard each other’s backs,” Chang said as the group crawled from under the coach to face the approaching threat.
When the menacing mob came within a few yard of Tod and his friends they halted. Silently, they stood like a black, foreboding wall, their eyes glaring hatred, their upraised hatchets glistening in the sunlight.
“Come on, you blackhearted spalpeens!” Scott shouted. “What are you waiting for?”
“The Spirit Fists like to taunt their prey before killing them,” Chang said. “They’ll come to us in their own time.”
The menacing figures had the small party surrounded and began to tighten the circle. Then, with a shout, they broke into a run, rushing headlong at Tod and his friends.
