About the Book
Will McCarty is sitting in the dark during a steady rain, positioned in a fox hole somewhere in Vietnam. If you gave him a map he would not even be able t find Vietnam, but how many 17 years olds during the 1960’s could? Bombs begin to fall, the sky lights up, and Viet Cong soldiers are everywhere. As he fires his rifle as fast as he can, orders come to make break for it. Moments later, while running through the dark, he becomes entangled in vines. Razor sharp needles slice his skin to bits as he struggles to free himself. He wonders in his mind whether he should have lied about his age and come to this place. Just then another soldier stops and cuts him free of the vines, only to be blown to pieces seconds later by an enemy grenade. Will is thrown to the ground by the blast, but makes it to safety. While recovering from his wounds at the make-shift hospital, he remembers his childhood adventures with his cousins, John and Marco.
The bullets whizzed by Will and Enapay’s heads and hit the water just in front of John and Marco. “Quick swim underwater to the bend, and then we can crawl out of the water.” Enapay shouted. As the boys exited the water into the woods, they hid behind the bushes and watched the men shooting at them from the van parked on the bridge. The black bag that they dropped into the river had peaked the boy’s interest as they tried to swim out and retrieve it. Wil it cost them their lives?
Enter a world where you’re scared to make friends and scared to trust anyone. A world where no one cares about you as you grow up and also where at age 17, you are killing an enemy that you have never seen. Travel with Will through his many childhood encounters and cry with him as he loses his friends in Vietnam.
