At the National Military Command Center, General Barton had just seen the FBI's Top Secret message; he immediately called the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs at his home.
"This is General Franklin."
"Sir, this is P.J. Barton at the NMCC. Sorry to bother you so late, but have you been briefed on the border tunnel that was discovered earlier today?"
"Yes, I am aware of the tunnel."
"Well, sir, we have an important development in that situation."
"What's that?"
"Sir, the FBI just released their report, and they are sure that one, and probably two nuclear weapons were moved through that tunnel into the United States in the past forty-eight hours."
"Is the FBI positive?"
"That's their conclusion, sir; they found enriched uranium deposits on the tunnel walls."
"Then, they're probably right, and that's bad news. Who has knowledge of these weapons? Who were the message addressees?"
"Sir, right now, Homeland Security, the Intelligence Agencies, and the NMCC are the only ones who have this information. Do you want us to alert the White House?"
"We should, but frankly, I don't know who we'd give it to. As of yet, we've had no dealings with anyone over there. And it being Inaugural night, I'm not sure they would be emotionally able to deal with it. Hold off sharing this with anyone until I discuss it with Sec Def. Now, any word yet on locating the President?"
"No, sir. She dismissed her Military Aide before departing the White House, and then ditched the Secret Service detail at the first ball they attended."
"Well, the President's safety is paramount. With the possibility that nuclear weapons have been sneaked into Washington, D.C., it is critical that we get the President out of here."
"Yes, I know," Barton agreed, "but we have to find her, first. Now, there are two other situations that I need to update you on. First, our Surveillance Officer is concerned about some developments she is seeing on our satellite returns from North Korea. You know where that large copper mining operation is?"
"Yes, I know about that."
"Well, sir, there appears to be significant activity in that mountain valley. Is there someone else you would want to look at this?"

About the Author
Colonel Paul Barber served for several years as a Team Chief in the National Military Command Center, responsible for Crisis Management for the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; an environment where interaction with the White House, State Department, Intelligence Agencies and other governmental entities was a daily occurrence. In a subsequent assignment to the U.S. State Department, Barber served as Senior Military Representative for Crisis Management, representing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in providing critical expertise and support to the Secretary of State.During a military assignment to North Africa, Barber lived and worked among the Moroccan people where he gained valuable knowledge and understanding of Muslims, their religion, customs, and value system. His later in-depth study of Islamic terrorism instilled another level of understanding of the Muslim people. The author's total life experiences have enabled him to present, in "CrossHairs," a scenario of realism that is not only comprehensible and conceivable in America today, but also predictable. Colonel Barber, a 27-year Air Force veteran, commanded a flying unit during the Vietnam War, completing over 200 combat support missions. He stood cockpit Alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis and flew over 3,500 hours during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Barber holds both Bachelor and Master's Degrees and is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He is a retired financial advisor now living near his family in East Texas.
