Hernietta O’Neil, President of the Historical Society,
looked from her beloved Belleterre House back to Joseph Dautrerive’s dark
brown, almost black eyes. She had agreed
to meet him in front of the historical home to discuss some possible changes,
but nothing had prepared her for what she heard. "You’re going to do what?” Henrietta asked.
“You heard me, Ma’am,” Joseph answered. “We’re going to
tear this old place down and replace it with something more practical.”
“Joseph Dautrerive! You should be ashamed of yourself. This
is the last antebellum plantation home with this type of architecture left in
this town. It’s a valuable historic structure, a jewel of French-Creole
construction. It’s the Belleterre House, for heaven’s sake.”

lived all over the world. His
short stories have appeared in journals and anthologies and his plays have been produced by local and regional theater groups. Holcombe and his wife currently live in a small Louisiana town, where they support the visual and performing arts because they believe that art, in any form, makes life worth living.
