About the Book

Deep in the heart of the south as World War II raged in Europe and the South Pacific, a baby girl named Rita was born.  Little Rita, one of three girls, was born in Birmingham, Alabama.  She lived her early years in a brick fortress-like home behind her family’s grocery store nestled in an African-American community.  Her large Sicilian-American family filled her young life with comfort, security, food and love.

Rita’s joy was short-lived as tragedy struck over and over again taking her dearly-loved parents in their prime, her beloved older sister and a favorite aunt.  Rosalie, Rita and Chris, the three sisters, were orphaned at a very young age and left to sort out their lives and keep a stiff upper lip as they shared their hopes, dreams and accomplishments with their extended family and a host of friends.  After Rosalie’s death, Rita became skilled at looking out for herself and protecting Chris.  She learned ‘never to surrender’.

After an early marriage Rita earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees while raising two children and working a full-time job.  Divorce brought new sadness to her life but Rita didn’t give up.  Instead she filled her life with activities and found delight in a successful career, a new marriage and world-wide travels to far-flung and often exotic places.

After early retirement, Rita continues to find happiness with Lyle, her husband, traveling extensively and gardening when she can find the time.  She takes great pleasure in seeing her two successful adult children accomplish their own goals.  Rita adores her three grandchildren and revels in their growth and endeavors.  Rita and Chris remain close though separated by a half continent.

Rita looks forward to opening each new chapter in her life knowing that even though there may be a bit of pain, there will also be lots of learning opportunities, satisfaction for jobs well done and the joyous anticipation of her next adventure.
