The Reward for Customer Loyalty?
The lease on the 3-Series BMW I had put a client in three years before had a month left on it. At the client’s request, we were at the same dealer that had leased it to her, so she was a repeat customer there. This usually guarantees royal treatment. We’d negotiated terms on a 5-Series, including the dealer’s agreement to pay her last payment on the old car.
They did not have the color she wanted in a Premium Package car, but assured us they could dealer trade for it. They agreed to call me when they had located it. The next day I received a call from the salesman, asking me if my client would be interested in a car with the Sport Package, instead of the Premium Package, for the same price, saying they had two on the lot. Sport Package cars sometimes ride harshly, so I checked with her, and agreed to drive the car before getting back to her with my opinion.
I took the car for a test drive, and found the ride acceptable. On the way back to the store, the salesman told me that if I convinced my client to buy a car from stock, he’d give me $100. I told him that was very generous of him, but I’d only do that if I felt the car was right for her, and if he paid me something, I’d just give it to her. He asked why I’d do that. I replied to the effect that I worked for her, not him.
I told her that story as we went back to the dealer to conclude the deal, and she laughed.
I immediately got up, exclaiming something about poultry droppings, and we exited the showroom.
They still had the keys to what was to be her lease return, so I went back to the store to get them. While we were waiting for them to move the car that blocked our exit, mentally composing our strongly worded letter to BMW North America, the salesperson came out and held out his hand in congratulation and saying, “Your deal is approved.”
