About the Book

Paul Bunyan and his Crew Separate the Continents is a fanciful look at the history of continental drift as told by retired geologist Paul Zimmer.  An outgrowth of tales he used to spin to teach his young children about geological phenomena, Zimmer continues his bent for marrying imaginative fiction with scientific fact, crafting a tall tale of how the mythical big man played a part in moving the congestion of continents just as he would clear a river log jam.  This is Zimmer’s second book, following The Glacial Feud between Pierre Glacie' and Paul Bunyan, published in 2006.

About the Author

A retired geologist, Paul Zimmer was born in Toledo, Ohio.  Turned onto geology and other sciences by a beloved middle school teacher, Paul followed this passion through his youth and graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University).  His start as a geologist/mining engineer in the iron mines of the Adirondacks launched a 40 year career that would include 30 moves, a Masters degree in Economic Geology from Washington State University, travels throughout the U.S., northern Canada, Mexico and Venezuela, as well as marrying and raising a family.  When writing home on his frequent travels, he would often invent stories for his young children featuring Paul Bunyan, a familiar character in the folklore of the northern states where they lived at the time. Through these stories, Paul was able to teach his children about prehistoric geological phenomena, such as the continental glacier and the effects still visible today.  These stories eventually combined to create his first book, The Glacial Feud between Pierre Glacie' and Paul Bunyan.  Paul continues his bent for melding fanciful fiction with scientific fact in his newest book, Paul Bunyan and his Crew Separate the Continents, a tall tale of the long history of what is now known as plate tectonics and how the mythical big man played a part in moving the congestion of land masses just as he would clear a river log jam.
