She said in a curious tone, “Big, yes, fat, no. You are definitely one hundred percent solid muscle without an ounce of fat. Shall we proceed in a scientific manner? I understand you are a college science professor.”
I winced at the thought, “No, not a professor anymore. I almost killed myself doing that. You’re going a bit fast for me. I’m just learning to walk and talk at the same time.”
At that moment, I heard a telepathic call from Cat.
He said, “Mind if I join you two?”
I informed Tina.
She looked up into my eyes, “He really is very concerned about you.”
I thought back “Ok.”
Cat popped into existence a few feet in front of me.
The minor explosion startled me into a flight or fight reaction.
I gave him an uppercut to the jaw.
He literally went flying a dozen yards and landed with a heavy thud.
He raised his head and gave a growl. He sounded angry.
The next thing I knew I was running full gallop for the barn, scared out of my wits that he was going to kill and eat me.
I misjudged when to slow down for the barn and ran right through the back wall. I really wasn’t thinking about what I was doing. I was just trying to get away from what I thought was extreme danger.
Now I was out into a trading area, and people were yelling in shock and surprise.
It was just so confusing to me. I had to get away and out into the open.
I heard someone yell, “Don’t let him go” and that was all it took for me to take off running down the main street, yelling, “Get out of my way!” in almost pure panic.
People scattered in all directions when they heard me thundering toward them.
I leapt over a few carts and kept looking for a wider street. I wanted to get away from the castle, away from the nightmare.
I had gone only a block or two more when Cat suddenly appeared in front of me again.
I reared up like a horse, terrified of him.
He raised his hand. “Hold.”
It felt like a giant hand suddenly grabbed me. It scared me even more, and I tried to struggle to escape.
My arms were pinned at my sides and I was using every ounce of strength to try to break free.
Cat looked like he was having a hard time holding me.
I heard Tina’s voice yell, “Let him go, he’ll kill himself trying to get free.”
Cat yelled back, “I can’t let him go, he might hurt someone accidentally. It’s market day with women and children all over the place.”
Tina was now at my side and swung around in front of me.
She slapped my face and yelled at me in utter fury, “Fight the horse, damn it. You’re a scientist. Don’t let it win.”
I was gasping like a stranded fish, but her words got through to me.
She got her own emotions under control. “Cat is going to let you go, and we’re going to walk. Nice and calmly…now.”
I felt the grip release and I wanted to bolt.

About the Book
Centaur Chronicles follows the adventures of a human scientist from an alternate time line that ends up on the planet Mythos. This college professor gets unwillingly transformed into a centaur to save himself from dying in a laboratory experiment gone horribly wrong. The "magic" of Mythos is his only hope of survival, as technology is useless in his particular case. As a centaur, he adopts the name Centaur, and he has to get used to his new, much larger, muscular body. Centaur quickly learns his new body has instincts of its own that will not be denied. Along the way, he becomes the ideal leader of the centaur community. Part of his new job is to figure out how to best combine ancient mythology and futuristic technology in such as way as to best benefit all centaurs and his new adopted homeworld. At the same time, he has to cope with the loss of his own personal past, as it is discovered he and Ambassador Cat share more than just common genetics.
About the Author
Richard Allen Hurd was born Oct. 19, 1964 in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. His early childhood, up to 1975, was spent on a farm outside Belvidere, NJ. In November of 1975, his family moved to Bangor, PA. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1983, and immediatly went into the Navy. Much of his four year career was spent at sea, as a Damage Control Petty Officer, Supply Division. He earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist in 1984. He traveled extensively while in the Navy, and earned his Good Conduct discharge in 1987. For 10 years, he worked a variety of construction jobs all across the USA. In 1997, he went to college to pursue a degree in ministry and music education. He graduated in 2002 with duel bachelor degrees, and has worked in the music and/or ministry field since. For Rich, writing is just a fun hobby. Centaur Chronicles is his fifth book to be published, and the third book in a planned ten book series.
