Mandy Miller and the Brownie Troop

As Mandy passed the used clothing store she almost tripped on the sidewalk. Staring at her from the shop window was a Brownie beret perched on top of a mannequin. She marched right into the shop and saw Mrs. Perkins, the Manager, who knew Mandy and her mother.
She greeted Mandy with a smile and said, "Hello Mandy, how can I help you?
"How much is the Brownie beret?" Mandy asked.
Mrs. Perkins took the beret off the mannequin, shook the dust from it, and gave it to Mandy.
Mandy placed the beret on her head, and looked in the cracked hand mirror sitting on the counter. The beret looked beautiful! It had a bright yellow patch on the front that read: Honor, Loyalty and Truth. She looked at Mrs. Perkins and said, "I need the beret for my Brownie meeting, but I don't have money to buy it.
"Mandy, you can trade the beret for one of your reading books, and you can take it home today and bring the book in tomorrow," said Mrs. Perkins.
"Oh thank you Mrs. Perkins," said Mandy as she walked out of the shop clutching the beret tightly.
As she was walking home she stopped and looked at the beret. It was brown, almost like chocolate, and the color of freshly dug dirt on a rainy day. She placed it near her cheek; it felt soft and warm like her toy lamb. Her hand touched the badge and she was filled with pride knowing she had the begining of her Brownie uniform.

About the Book
Mandy Miller is an eight year old English girl struggling with her identity coming from a poor family whose father was killed in the second World War. She wants to join the Brownies, but her mother cannot afford the uniform or the club dues. Mandy is faced with many obstacles which she is determined will not stand in her way. She finally achieves her goal; knowing that if she wants to join the Brownies only she Mandy Miller can accomplish that goal
About the Author
June Gatewood is a a World War two baby born in England to an English mother and a Mexican father. June was a nurse in the Royal Air Force and met her American husband Bill in England and emigrated to the United States. She is a professional Health Care Administrator; managing an Assistant Care Facility in Los Angeles. June has three children Suzy, Donna, and James. She has been published in numerous anthologies, including the National Library of Poetry in 1994 and 1995. June is a women of substance, and can often be found in her West Hollywood home with her two Shitzu dogs, China and Marmite writing her stories or knitting her dolls and creating different animals.
