Let's take off with the high priced boys at different positions and some cheaper guys that are helping their teams win a division, just not making much money.
A Rod, the 28 million dollar man. He is one heck of a player, but, worth 28 million for one year, I think not. For this amount he should sell the ticket, seat the fan, give them a sandwich, drink, and program. When the game is over meet them at the gate and thank them for coming to watch him play. There hasn't been a player that I can remember since 1952 worth that much money and I've seen much greater players than A Rod. Justin Pedroia makes 457K and will probably be AL most valuable player. What a difference, huh? Possible rookie of the year in the NL makes 401K, his backup 3.1 million. Designated hitter Ortiz, 13 million and doesn't even have to play in the field. Can you see where this is going?
Why do we now have middle relief, 7th inning man, 8th inning man and a closer? Has the game changed and we need these extra guys? The closer making 10 million a year to come in and throw maybe 9 to 30 pitches and then he has to have a day off, what kind of game is this?
Starting pitchers today can only last 5 or maybe 6 innings? Pitch count? I don't ever remember Spahn, Koufax or Gibson having a pitch count. Try and bring a reliever into Gibson's game and you may have a fight on your hands. Fierce competitors indeed. If I had to (which I never would) pay a starting pitcher 16 million a year, he had better be able to throw more then 5 innings. The starter only works every 5th day anyway. Maybe if we gave him 20 million he could pitch 7 innings! Give me a break!
Managers are partially to blame for the closers getting new, big money every year. They try to get a closer a save record and in turn when they do get it, they demand more money from management. This is good management? I think not.
The owners started the bidding wars and the poor loyal, faithful fan is the one suffering by having to pay the high ticket, concession, and other high prices at the stadium. I think a man named George started all this, bought some championships and this year a 3rd place club, 200 million payroll equals 3rd place, 44 million equals division winner. How could that be? Our economic world collapsing around us and ballplayers demanding more money to play a game they are supposed to love to play. What has happened to our world? Please, keep our government out of it though. more
